Phạm Văn Thông là một chuyên gia động vật hoang dã nổi tiếng với kinh nghiệm phong phú và những đóng góp quan trọng cho các nỗ lực bảo tồn tại Việt Nam. Với kinh nghiệm làm việc tại các tổ chức như Chương trình Rùa Châu Á (Asian Turtle Program), Trung tâm Bảo tồn Rùa (Turtle Sanctuary Conservation Center) và Tổ chức Save Vietnam’s Wildlife, Thông đã tích lũy được kiến thức chuyên sâu về phân tích thống kê, nghiên cứu thực địa và chiến lược bảo tồn, đặc biệt trong lĩnh vực giám sát động vật hoang dã.

Phạm Văn Thông đã dẫn đầu nhiều dự án tiên phong, bao gồm tìm kiếm một số loài rùa hiếm nhất thế giới như rùa Hoàn Kiếm (Rafetus swinhoei), rùa hộp Đông Dương (Cuora galbinifrons), rùa hộp Bourret (Cuora bourretii), rùa hộp Trường Sơn (Cuora picturata), rùa đầu to (Platysternon megacephalum) và rùa vảy (Palea steindachneri). Ngoài ra, anh cũng đã chỉ đạo các sáng kiến thành công trong việc tìm kiếm tê tê Trung Quốc (Manis pentadactyla) và giám sát sau thả loài tê tê Java (Manis javanica).

Đóng góp của Thông không chỉ giới hạn ở rùa và tê tê. Anh đã có những khám phá quan trọng trong lĩnh vực bảo tồn linh trưởng, nổi bật là việc phát hiện quần thể mới của loài vượn má vàng phía Nam (Nomascus gabriellae).

Trong vai trò mới là Phó Giám đốc của CTNC, Phạm Văn Thông sẽ tận dụng chuyên môn của mình để quản lý các chương trình bảo tồn thiên nhiên và lãnh đạo các dự án liên quan đến tín chỉ carbon, chứng nhận rừng và các sáng kiến môi trường khác. Với kinh nghiệm sâu rộng và đam mê không ngừng nghỉ cho công tác bảo tồn động vật hoang dã, Thông đang ở vị trí lý tưởng để đóng góp giá trị to lớn cho sứ mệnh của CTNC trong việc thúc đẩy phát triển bền vững và bảo tồn đa dạng sinh học tại Việt Nam. Các nỗ lực của anh tập trung vào việc tạo ra những tác động thực sự, đo lường được cho bảo tồn động vật hoang dã, thông qua khôi phục môi trường sống, loại bỏ các mối đe dọa và phục hồi các quần thể động vật về trạng thái tự nhiên ban đầu.
